Jenoptik appointed “Preferred Supplier” to Leica Camera AG, new projects planned.

Jena/Solms, 12.07.2010

The Digital Imaging business unit of Jenoptik’s Optical Systems division is appointed preferred supplier to Leica Camera AG and receives a corresponding award. The two partners will be extending their collaboration to new products.

As a result of its excellent production and the fast ramp-up for the production of the components for the LEICA M9 range-finder camera, Jenoptik received the Preferred Supplier Award from Leica Camera AG. Jenoptik developed the electronic core components in conjunction with Leica and transferred them to mass production at the Jena site. Jenoptik has since delivered four times the originally planned volume of units, ensuring that volume production maintained its high quality standard at all times. As a result of the success of the Leica M9 the parties agreed a further increase in the production volume.

“Once again Jenoptik has demonstrated the strength of its performance in the field of optoelectronic modules and digital imaging systems”, said Rudolf Spiller, Chairman of LEICA Camera AG. Dr. Dirk-Michael Rothweiler, Head of the Optical Systems division and member of the Executive Management Board of the Jenoptik Group: “We have fulfilled the stringent requirements of our partner in terms of production volume and quality at all times and, as such, have made an important contribution towards the success of the M9, something of which we are proud.”

As a result of their successful collaboration the two partners will be extending it to new products and projects. Within the framework of the multi-year cooperation agreement the volume supplied by Jenoptik will be in the double figure million euro range.

In its Digital Imaging business unit Jenoptik specializes in the development and manufacture of high-performance digital imaging systems. The components, modules and systems are used in digital photography, microscopy, including, amongst others, applications for life sciences, biotechnology as well as in the areas of industrial metrology and traffic safety.

About Leica Camera AG.

Leica Camera AG is an international company operating in the optical industry with headquarters in Solms, Germany and a second production location in Portugal. Seven distribution subsidiaries of the group cover the major markets worldwide. All products from the three areas of photography, hunting scopes and field observation have one task in common: an enhanced image. The product program covers a broad range of photographic cameras, projectors for play-back as well as binoculars, scopes and range-finder equipment for observation. The myth behind the Leica brand was established by lenses - handy, compact precision optics for analog and digital photography, geared towards practical application. Thanks to targeted investment in the manufacture of aspherical lenses the company has accumulated wide-ranging know-how over many years, from production, optical calculations, type of measurement technology used, through to the design and installation of lenses for aspherical lens systems.

About Jenoptik’s Optical Systems division.

With its Optical Systems division the Jenoptik Group is one of the few manufacturers in the world to produce precision optics and systems designed to meet the highest quality standards. Besides opto-mechanical and opto-electronical systems, modules and assemblies the division is a development and production partner for optical, micro-optical and optical coating components– made of optical glass, infrared materials as well as plastic. It possesses outstanding expertise in the development and manufacture of micro-optics for beam shaping used in the semiconductor industry and laser material processing. The product portfolio also includes components and systems for life sciences as well as lighting & energy applications, opto-electronical systems for digital image capture and processing as well as cameras for digital microscopy.
