Antireflection coatings (also called antireflective coatings or AR coatings) reduce reflection of optical surfaces from lenses, objectives, prisms, or display discs.
Objectives made of several lenses would not be usable without AR coatings, because each lens looses 8 % of light intensity du to reflections that cause disturbances in the image and reduce contrasts by scattered light. Antireflection coated display covers improve the readability of displays and prevent disturbing reflections.
Coatings can be optimized for single wavelengths (e.g. laser) or they can be adjusted to broad bands of wavelengths (e.g., VIS or NIR).
Using sophisticated techniques and special designs we can combine antireflection coatings with supplementary functions, such as scratch resistance or improved cleanability.
