Transparent plastics have proven to be suitable materials for various applications. Camera systems, head-up displays, reflectors for LED lighting and many other optical components and systems can be produced in large quantities at reasonable costs. The conditioning of surfaces hereby plays an important role.
Thin metal or dielectric coatings allow for realization of functions well known to glass optics, such as mirrors, antireflection coatings, filters or beam splitters for polymer optics. In combination with varnishes or plasma polymers, coatings serve to protect surfaces against mechanical, chemical, or other environmental influences. They can also improve cleanability (Easy-To-Clean-coatings) or realize various color effects.
The peculiarities of plastic as a material and the fabrication of optical components via injection-molding call for consideration of surface conditioning already at design phase.
