The world's first approved and operational fixed “TraffiSection” system with “Driver face recognition”, “Classification” and “Connection to available VMS system” modules, including optional video-documentation has been successfully implemented in the Arisdorf Tunnel (A2 Motorway) in Switzerland.
This is the first of three systems which has been deployed in the context of the Swiss pilot project. It monitors a 1.8 kilometer section of tunnel.
What sets this “TraffiSection” system apart is the triggering of an evidence photo of the vehicle driver for each violation detected – quite a technological challenge considering the camera is located only 80 meters from the exit portal. The system must be able to promptly take the picture, even if the recorded speed reaches 250 km/h.
The system is also distinguished by its use in an area with variable speed limits. In case the speed limit is reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h, the system must acknowledge the lower speed limit and the legally required clearance time must be modified. This means that vehicles which are in the section during the change continue to be measured against the higher limit. For the collection of evidence, it is necessary that all variable speed message displays be recorded photographically at three cross-sections. These images, together with the rear images at the entry and exit portals and the evidence photos, help the police and public prosecutor's office to prove the violation.
The second fixed section speed enforcement system in Switzerland is in planning and will monitor the A9 in the canton of Waadt between the Aigle and Bex Nord junctions, a section totaling approximately 8.5 kilometers.
