The abbreviation AWACS stands for Airborne Early Warning and Control System. AWACS are aircraft supported radar systems, used for air surveillance and as operations control center. The first AWACS has been in service in 1946. Since the end of the seventies AWACS systems of type E-3 have been in service, based on the Boeing 707 and since the end of the nineties also based on the Boeing 767.
A distinctive characteristic of the system is the rotodome with a diameter of 9.1 m, installed above the fuselage of the aircraft. It contains the radar unit used for surveillance and tracking of airborne targets of all kinds.
