2006-2010

December 2010

Jenoptik successfully concludes the sale of its space business. Astrium, an EAdS subsidiary, acquires all shares in Jena-Optronik GmbH.
Activities in the areas of security and defense technology and in aerial cameras, however, remain with Jenoptik. The resulting cash inflow reduces the net debt significantly to below 80 million euros. With the sale, Jenoptik is able to give a more detailed EBIT forecast for 2010.



November 2010

Jenoptik is now present in Japan with a majority shareholding. Kantum Electronics will also continue to participate in the company, following on many years of close and successful partnership with Jenoptik. Previously specialized in the distribution of high-power diode lasers, the Japanese unit will now be open to all Jenoptik divisions.

The Defense & Civil Systems division will supply 40 ground power units and 25 frequency converters to a passenger airline for the airport infrastructure of a Middle Eastern country, beginning in 2011. The contract comes to 5 million euros.



October 2010

Jenoptik produces its first laser processing systems for use in 3D metal processing. The flexible three-dimensional laser cutting and welding of metals will allow Jenoptik to meet any particularly complex individual needs of its customers.

Jenoptik supports a traffic safety project in Weimar. A speed indicator installed at a pedestrian crossing there will provide increased safety for children. The project is awarded first prize by the European Transport Safety Council in its “Roads to Respect” campaign.



September 2010

Jenoptik presents new laser systems for crystalline photovoltaics at the PVSEC trade fair in Valencia, to complement the company’s laser processing systems for thin-film technology. There is particular demand for the modular system for use in a variety of production processes.

Another major order for the Defense & Civil Systems division: Jenoptik receives a 23-million-dollar order from the U.S. government for power generators. The units are slated for use in a patriot missile defense system to protect the infrastructure of an Arab country. Delivery is to follow from 2011.



August 20010

A total of 34 new Career Academy students begin their career training at Jenoptik sites around Germany.

The Defense & Civil Systems division receives a major 20-million-euro order for radomes to be used in the production of Eurofighter aircraft. Along with other major orders, this contributed to a divisional record in order intake that continued throughout the year.



July 2010

The Optical systems division receives the “Preferred Supplier Award” from Leica Camera AG. The award is a reflection both of its strong cur- rent production and the rapid expansion of its production capacities in response to the high demand for the “old-school” Leica M9 camera. Jenoptik provides the main electronic components for the device.

Jenoptik’s Industrial Metrology division produces its 1000th HOMMEL-ETAMIC opticline CONTOUR optical shaft measuring system some ten years after the first generation of the product family went into production. Jenoptik is the global market leader in this field of technology.



June 2010

Jenoptik teams up with Dräger to present two new thermal imaging cameras for use by fire fighters and rescue services. The Dräger camera is built around a Jenoptik infrared module that is in serial production in Jena.

The Jenlas®  D2.mini green diode-pumped thin-disk laser goes into serial production. Considerably more compact than its predecessor, the new laser also provides a greatly improved beam quality.

Jenoptik sells its minority share in caverion GmbH to the Finnish building and technology group YIT. Jenoptik, which will continue to focus more closely on its core business, received a high double-digit million euro sum in the deal.



May 2010

Jenoptik expands its capacity in China, with a new Industrial Metrology division building in Shanghai to combine planning, production, and sales alongside an application and training center all in one place. The new site is also available for use by other divisions.

The Industrial Metrology division unveils a flexible and modern internal test sensor, which can be used in fully automatic drilling processes.

The Traffic Solutions division’s Traffistar system records speeding vehicles in an Autobahn tunnel near berlin using the Black Flash technology developed by Jenoptik.



April 2010

The Optical systems division unveils optoelectronics components and modules for innovative lighting applications at the Light + Building trade fair in Frankfurt. Jenoptik also presents an innovative new LED streetlight together with Lumenova, Jenoptik’s partner in the project.

Jenoptik donates the 14,800 euros collected at its New Year’s reception to a daycare center in Triptis, Thuringia, Germany, the location of the company’s Optoelectronic Systems business unit.



March 2010

The Jenoptik lasers & Material processing division receives a major order to deliver medical lasers worth 16 million U.S. dollars to American customers over the next three years.

The Traffic Solutions division receives a major order for over 12 million euros for systems to be delivered and installed before the end of 2010.

Jenoptik raises over 22 million euros in a capital increase which are to be used to expand the company’s core business and international presence.



February 2010

The Traffic solutions division joins the Jenoptik umbrella brand as of the beginning of February. The division delivers its new Traffisection®  traffic monitoring system, which measures the average speed of a vehicle, to Austria, Switzerland, and Kuwait for about 4 million euros.

Jenoptik RGB lasers, known as WhiteLight lasers, are employed at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Even before its official opening in March, Jenoptik begins to receive orders for laser processing systems via its new laser application center in South Korea. The center allows potential customers in Asia to test Jenoptik systems on site.


January 2010

Jenoptik begins the year by consolidating its entire u.s. optics business under the umbrella of JENOPTIK Optical Systems Inc. With its new structure, Jenoptik will be better able to expand within the North American market from its headquarters in Jupiter, Florida.

Jenoptik sells its 10,000th Jenlas®  D2.x green thin- disk laser at the photonics West trade fair in san Francisco. More than 1,000 of the systems have been manufactured each year in Jena since production began. And, for the first time, Jenoptik has come out with a new version of the successful product, which was received with great interest.



December 2009

The Jenoptik Executive Board and the IG Metall union agree to a new collective agreement. The new company wage agreement will take effect on January 1, 2010, with a duration of 15 months.

The Group’s core workforce is to be reduced to 3,000 in number. The process is to be carried out with careful attention to social responsibility.


November 2009

The Jenoptik Innovation Award 2009 goes to a team of the Defense & Civil Systems division. The team received recognition for its auxiliary power unit.

As part of Jena’s Long Night of Science, some 5,000 visitors get to know Jenoptik up close, both at the corporate headquarters and at the site in the business park in Göschwitz, Jena.

Jenoptik and the Jena University of Applied Sciences expand their cooperation and sign an agreement to introduce a doctoral position in optics, laser technology, and laser material processing.


October 2009

In the Düsseldorf tunnel beneath the Rhine River, a speed measurement system installed by Jenoptik goes online. The showcase project is the first inner-city tunnel to be equipped with the new technology.

The business unit Digital Imaging of the Optical Systems division has developed the electronic modules of the new range-finder camera LEICA M9 in conjunction with Leica.

The Lasers & Material Processing division receives the 2009 IC Industry Award from the trade journal EuroAsia Semiconductor for its laser processing system JENOPTIK-VOTANTM Semi 300.


September 2009

Lumenova GmbH from Esslingen, Germany, and the Jenoptik division Optical Systems conclude a wide-ranging strategic alliance in the area of LED lighting.

Jenaer Kunstverein, the Jena art society, and Jenoptik support the exhibition of Weimar artists called “Bauhaus Today – Art and Teaching in Weimar in 2009” to mark the 90th anniversary of the Bauhaus movement.


August 2009

A total of 32 new trainees and Career Academy students begin their careers at Jenoptik Group locations throughout Germany.

The Traffic Solutions division receives approval for mobile digital technology by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Germany’s national metrology institute.

The Jenoptik Excellence Program has been implemented rapidly throughout the Group. Cost-cutting measures are being expanded and current capacities adapted in the second half of the year.


July 2009

Laser Application Center in South Corea: Jenoptik and the Corean company Telstar-Hommel Corp. establish the joint venture JENOPTIK Koreo Corp., in which Jenoptik holds 66.6 percent of all shares.

At the LASER World of Photonics 2009 convention in Munich, Jenoptik presents new optics for laser material processing, fiber-coupled diode lasers with single emitters, OEM fiber lasers, and laser systems for industrial applications.

Jenoptik and LightTrans sign a cooperation agreement on micro-optical components and systems.

The Defense & Civil Systems divisions takes part in the robotics conference of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) in Berlin.

Jenoptik donates new PC technology to Jena’s Ernst Abbe Gymnasium (grammar school) to be used in the school’s economics and law room.


April 2009

JENOPTIK AG is the third shareholder of the “Jenaer Bildungszentrum gGmbH – Schott, Carl Zeiss, Jenoptik” training center, in which the three Jena-based companies combine forces in the training of their up-and-coming staff and in qualification measures.

For the 19th year, Jenoptik supports the annual “Jugend forscht” Thuringia state youth science and research competition in Jena.


March 2009

The Optical Systems division and the Israeli company Dagesh establish the joint venture JENOPTIK OptiSys Ltd. based in Israel. Both companies retain 50 percent of the shares.

Jenoptik sells its devalued share certificates and donates the proceeds to Jena’s Saaleknirpse day nursery.


February 2009

The Industrial Metrology division acquires parts of the Chinese company Shanghai AES Auto Equipment Co. Ltd. (AES), thus expanding Jenoptik’s assembly capacities and procurement expertise.

In appreciation of Jenoptik’s many years of support, Jena’s Friedrich Schiller University renames the lecture hall of the Faculty for Physics and Astronomy “Jenoptik Hall”.


January 2009

By means of acquiring the Berlin-based company Three-Five Epitaxial Services AG, Jenoptik expands its diode laser activities to include yet another stage of production. Jenoptik is now capable of providing its own epitaxy wafer production.


December 2008

Jenoptik returns to the TecDax, an index comprising Germany’s 30 most prominent technology shares.

The Astrium satellite manufacturer named Jenoptik as its “Master Supplier 2007” for guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) sensors.

In a contract valued at over 5 million euros, Jenoptik will develop METimage, a new generation of cameras for weather satellites for the German Aerospace Center.


November 2008

Jenoptik is awarded preferred supplier status by Carl Zeiss SMT AG for its microoptics components and systems.

At the Jenoptik Innovation Days event, a team from the Lasers & Material Processing divisions wins the group-internal Innovation Award 2008 for its laser system for thermal laser-beam dicing.

Jenoptik prevails in the Asyst case as the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington confirms the decision in Jenoptik’s favor made by the San Jose District Court.

Bystronic glass and Jenoptik join forces in the construction of production facilities for thin-film solar cells.

The acquisition of SPI Lasers by TRUMPF stands to accelerate the development of fiber lasers by Jenoptik in its Jena-based joint venture with TRUMPF.

Jenoptik delivers the first of several hundred thermal imaging systems for the surveillance and security of the European Union’s external borders.


September 2008

Jenoptik’s Traffic Solutions division celebrates its 75th anniversary. Founded in 1933, the company, based in Monheim, Germany, has been active in photographic traffic surveillance since 1955.

The international traffic safety sector gained momentum over the second half of 2008. Jenoptik received one of its new orders for digital traffic safety technology from Lithuania. Some 150 state-of-the-art stationary and mobile radar systems are installed in Lithuania in the course in 2008.


August 2008

A total of 38 new trainees and career academy students begin their careers at Jenoptik Group locations throughout Germany.

Jenoptik equips the RapidEye earth observation system with five multispectral cameras. The German company RapidEye AG plans to establish a geospatial information service using this technology.

Jenoptik and InfraTec expand their strategic distribution partnership in thermography and IR cameras with a comprehensive supply contract for thermal imaging cameras.


July 2008

The JENOPTIK-VOTANTM G Semi laser system for the thermal laser-beam dicing wins the Best of West Award of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).

Jenoptik, a provider of application-specific laser systems, is also becoming a development partner for the solar industry.

Jenoptik supports the Abbe School of Photonics founded at Jena’s Friedrich Schiller University for the training of future scientists.


June 2008

Rudolf Humer, entrepreneur from Hinterbühl, Austria, and chairman of the ECE European City Estates Supervisory Board, becomes the new chairman of the Jenoptik Supervisory Board.

Jenoptik founds a joint venture in India with a majority share in the new company.

Jenoptik and Leica Camera AG conclude a cooperation agreement to intensify their cooperation in digital image processing.


May 2008

Jenoptik receives a major industrial metrology order from Continental’s Powertrain Division for the complex measurements of various components in a new U.S.-produced diesel injection system for trucks.

Jenoptik continues to sell off its non-strategic units, selling 51 percent in LDT Laser Display Technology GmbH to Rheinmetall Defense, and all shares in XTREME technologies GmbH to Japan’s Ushio Group.


April 2008

Jenoptik sensors enable the European Space Agency’s first unmanned transporter to dock on to the ISS.

Jenoptik supplies major components for Europe’s Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) program.

Journalists from some 20 countries come to Jena and visit Jenoptik to meet with leaders in culture, science, and industry.

The Group looks back on a year of change at its balance sheet press conference. In addition to a greater focus on customers and markets, an increase in the company’s cash flow, a decrease in net debt, and an increase in its equity ratio, Jenoptik introduces a new financing structure.

Jenoptik supports the annual “Jugend forscht” Thuringia state youth research competition for the 18th time.

Jenoptik celebrates the 15th anniversary of its diode laser work. Jenoptik is now the world’s leader in diode laser quality.

A total of 25 trainees successfully complete their period of apprenticeship with Jenoptik companies.

Jenoptik begins the year with a new divisional structure, focusing more on customers and markets. The divisions are Lasers & Material Processing, Optical Systems, Industrial Metrology, Traffic Solutions and Defense & Civil Systems.

Largest space technology contract in company history: Jenoptik will supply the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation with rendezvous and docking sensors in a contract valued in the eight-figure range.

Jenoptik provides equipment for a thin-film solar cell production line.


December 2007

The Jenoptik Group acquires 100 percent of the shares in
Epigap Optoelektronik GmbH, Berlin with effect from December 31, 2007.
The company is thus strengthening its Optical Systems division. Epigap Optoelektronik GmbH,
founded in 1995, specializes in the development and manufacture of photodiodes, LED chips and
components as well as optoelectronic modules and sensor system elements and employs around
50 personnel.
Major order for the manufacture of radomes for the Eurofighter
The Jenoptik subsidiary ESW GmbH, Wedel, has been awarded a major order, with a total value of
around 27 million euros, by BAE Systems of Great Britain for the production of radomes. The order
will extend the full capacity utilization of the ESW production line through to the year 2016.


December 4, 2007

"Moments" - joint exhibition portrays a symbiosis between Otto Piene and Elisabeth Goldring Piene
In conjunction with the Jenaer Kunstverein (Art Association) the JENOPTIK AG Gallery opens a joint exhibition of works by the husband and wife artists Piene/Goldring who live in the USA. The presentation entitled "Moments" is a contribution to "Jena - 2008 City of Science".

The Free State of Thuringia sells its 14.8 percent share in JENOPTIK AG to ECE Industriebeteiligungen GmbH, Vienna
This company consequently becomes the Group's largest individual shareholder.


November 16, 2007

Green light for the PUMA - Jenoptik's long-term defense technology business
The Jenoptik subsidiary ESW GmbH, Wedel, is playing a key role in the construction of the new PUMA armored tank which will go into mass production. The aim is to supply subsystems and components worth around 70 million euros by the year 2020. Between 2010 and 2020 a total of 405 tanks are to be delivered to the German Army.


November 15, 2007

With the early repayment of a fixed interest-bearing bond in the sum of 150 million euros the Group continues with its strategic reorientation.
For the repayment of the bond Jenoptik uses the existing call option at a price of 103.938, corresponding to a total repayment sum of nearly 156 million euros. As planned, in particular proceeds from the sale of M+W Zander were used for this purpose.


November 13, 2007

Jenoptik Group nine-month report - new organizational and management structure with effect from January 2008
During the first nine months of the year the Group posted an 8.8 percent increase in sales to 374.7 million euros. The Laser & Optics and Mechatronics divisions both reported significant increases. The Group EBIT came in at 21.2 million euros (in prev. year 24.2 million euros). The new Group organizational and management structure is also presented to the general public for the first time. The operational business, which will be combined within five divisions from January 2008, is intended to make the Group more market and client-driven and reduce costs.

Jenoptik presents an innovative camera system - digital imaging activities are amalgamated
JENOPTIK AG presents the new SINAR Hy6 to the specialist photo world. The matching, efficient digital camera backs are also based on technology from Jena. In addition, the Group is combining its extensive expertise in the area of digital imaging so that it will be even better placed to exploit future growth opportunities.


July 17, 2007

The Jenoptik subsidiary Jena-Optronik GmbH delivers the last of the five multi-spectral cameras for the RapidEye satellite-based earth observation system.
The cameras, which go by the name of the Jena Spaceborne Scanner (JSS), are considered the heart of the observation system and can take needle sharp, multi-spectral, high resolution images of any point on the earth on a daily basis. This will enable key data for environmental observations and disaster protection to be 'fleshed out'.

Jenoptik awarded major order by the solar industry
Jenoptik Automatisierungstechnik GmbH receives a major, multi-million euro order for the supply of series systems for structuring thin-film solar cells. In this context photoactive semiconductors are applied in the form of thin films onto a substrate. The minimal amount of material and energy consumption during the production process offers significant savings potential over crystalline silicon technology.

New head of the JENOPTIK Group
Dr. Michael Mertin takes over the leadership of JENOPTIK AG as Chairman of the Executive Board, replacing Alexander von Witzleben who is moving to the Haniel Group. Frank Einhellinger is appointed new Jenoptik Chief Financial Officer.


June 18, 2007

The TRUMPF Group, Dietzingen and JENOPTIK AG intensify their cooperation arrangement, established in 2001, and set up a joint venture for innovative laser components.
The name of the new company is JT Optical Engine GmbH + Co. KG with registered offices in Jena. The 20 employees will develop, produce and market optical modules for fiber lasers.


April 25, 2007

State-of-the-art traffic monitoring systems from Jenoptik in the new Jena motorway tunnel
From now on digital cameras of the Jenoptik subsidiary ROBOT Visual Systems GmbH will be monitoring speeds in the new A4 motorway tunnel at Jena Lobeda. This is already Jenoptik's 20th stationary system for digital speed monitoring in the tunnel systems on Thuringia's motorways.

Jena-Optronik is Boeing's first German "Supplier of the Year".
The Jenoptik subsidiary is the first German company to receive the "Supplier of the Year 2006" award in the avionics area from the US technology group Boeing. The company was chosen from a field of more than 27,000 suppliers. With this award the world's leading aerospace company rewards commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction as well as the high quality of the products.


April 17, 2007

Jenoptik subsidiary ESW GmbH is awarded upgrade order for Swiss Army tanks.
ESW GmbH, Wedel has been awarded a contract by the Swiss technology and armaments company RUAG as part of the upgrading of the Pz 87 Leo standard battle tank of the Swiss Army. The battle tank is being upgraded with a digital, electro-mechanic weapon stabilization system. The total order is worth in excess of 13 million euros.


April 5, 2007

Jenoptik Group completely takes over US shareholding in industrial measurement technology.
Hommelwerke GmbH and ETAMIC S.A., acquired in autumn 2006, are merging their worldwide activities under the auspices of the Jenoptik Group. Current steps include a change of name to HOMMEL-ETAMIC GmbH in Germany and the complete takeover of the former minority shareholding in the USA.


March 29, 2007

The new Jenoptik Group posted strong growth in 2006. In 2007 the focus remains on further orientation towards customers and markets for profitable growth.
The continuing business divisions finished one of their most successful years in the company's history Sales increased by 18.3 percent to 485.1 million euros (prev. year 410.1 million euros). The result from operating activities was up by 52.5 percent to 38.2 million euros (prev. year 25.1 million euros).

5,555th green thin-disk laser from Jenoptik.
Since series production began at the end of 1999, the sales figures for green thin-disk lasers have risen continuously. More than 1,000 lasers are now produced every year in Jena-Göschwitz. Jenoptik's successful products are primarily used in medical applications.

Alexander von Witzleben, Chairman of the Executive Board, moves to the Haniel Group with effect from July 1, 2007.
Due to the wish of Mr. von Witzleben to move to the Haniel Group, Duisburg, new appointments to the Executive Board of JENOPTIK AG had become necessary, The Supervisory Board appoints Dr. Michael Mertin to become the new Chairman of the Executive Board of JENOPTIK AG as of July 1, 2007. Frank Einhellinger is to be the new CFO.

The Jenoptik Group presents new developments from laser technology and polymer optics at the Photonics West Trade Fair in the USA.
Photonics West, which is being staged from January 22 to 25, 2007, is one of the world's most important headline trade fairs for photonics technologies and is held annually in San José, California.


January 11, 2007

ROBOT Visual Systems GmbH, a Jenoptik subsidiary in the Sensors division, has been awarded a major international contract for traffic safety technology well in excess of 10 million euros.
The Jenoptik subsidiary will supply digital camera systems for red light monitoring to Canada.



November 1, 2006

Combining family and professional life better:
Jenoptik begins the construction of a day-care facility for children in the Göschwitz industrial park in Jena and will invest more than 1.9 million euros in this project.

As a new member of the executive board, Dr. Michael Mertin will be responsible for the operating business.
He succeeds Norbert Thiel, who will be turning his attention to new tasks outside Jenoptik after nine years in management positions.

Jenoptik acquires the French measurement technology company ETAMIC SA.
Through the merger of Etamic and Hommelwerke a globally operating system provider is formed which offers production measurement technology for the automotive and supply industries.

15 years of competence in light - Jenoptik is celebrating its anniversary.
Within the framework of the "Thuringian Day" Jenoptik is presenting a space and light show in the Ernst-Abbe square in the centre of Jena. Jenoptik's high-power lasers paint the history of the city and its present brilliance.

Jenoptik presents itself at the optics trade fair "Optatec".
Unique-mode, which Jenoptik acquired in early 2006, is attending for the first time. The corporation will be operating under the name JENOPTIK unique-mode GmbH.

Jenoptik opens a new high-technology factory in Berlin-Adlershof in order to cover the entire process chain for high-power diode lasers within the group.
From autumn 2006, laser bars - the basis of high-power diode lasers - will be developed and produced in the new fab.

Jenoptik inaugurates Europe's largest and most modern production centre for polymer optics in Triptis/Thuringia.

Within the framework of the European Space Agency's Exo-Mars mission Jenoptik was assigned the lead in a study concerning new Imaging Lidar technologies.
ESA's EXO-Mars mission is to explore the biological environment on the Mars before other spacecrafts or human beings will land on the red planet.

Sales and earnings of the 'new Jenoptik' with double-digit growth in the first quarter 2006.
In comparison with the previous year's quarter, sales of the continuing business divisions increased by 20.6 percent to 109.0 million euros. The result from operating activities of the continuing business divisions increased by 66.5 percent to 8.9 million euros.

Jenoptik wins proceedings before the Bundesgerichtshof (Federal Supreme Court).
The Bundesgerichtshof ruled in favour of JENOPTIK AG in the appeals proceedings regarding a case in which a DEWB shareholder had claimed that Jenoptik had to take over shares against the payment of a compensation.

The negative group result is affected by the sale of Clean Systems. Photonics closes the past fiscal better than expected.

Jenoptik strengthens its presence in China with a new joint venture in the field of production measurement technology.

Robot Visual Systems GmbH offers with its new TraffiTower a state-of-the-art and functional alternative for its speed monitoring units that have been working for 35 years.
