Jenoptik’s red light enforcement camera approved in United Kingdom
Automated enforcement specialists Jenoptik Traffic Solutions UK have received Home Office Type Approval for a new Red Light enforcement camera which operates as a stand-alone device to spot violations at signal-controlled junctions.
Unlike other systems on the market, the VECTOR SR Red Light operates in a “non-invasive” way, removing the need for loops or strips in the junction’s road surface. The camera visually monitors the signal heads meaning there is no need to physically connect the traffic lights with the enforcement system. This is the only solution of this type to have gained approval and works equally well with all signal head types; whether they utilise traditional incandescent or modern LED bulbs.
Jenoptik is known as the UK’s leader in average speed enforcement systems which calculate speeds based on the time taken to travel between fixed points on a road, as well as the recently approved VECTOR SR Spot Speed device. The newly-approved Red Light device uses the same VECTOR2 ANPR camera platform and Jenoptik’s own 3D tracking radar. Both items are light weight and can be mounted on a passively-safe pole or existing street furniture, and because they work independently of the signals and road surface, are simple to install and cost-effective to maintain.
The system can operate alongside Jenoptik’s patented VECTOR IR Infra-Red illumination module, which means images can be captured on a fully dark road without any distracting flashes or dazzling pools of light.
“This is the product our customers have been waiting for – a modern, digital and non-invasive Red Light enforcement system,” explained Geoff Collins, Jenoptik Traffic Solutions UK’s Deputy Managing Director. “We can now offer fair and accurate Red Light, Spot Speed and Average Speed solutions using a common core of known, reliable components, providing responsible drivers a safer journey.
“Supported by Infra-Red illumination, lightweight enough to mount on a passively safe pole or existing street furniture and with no need for in-road sensors or signal head connections, VECTOR SR represents a step forward in Red Light enforcement technology.”

Optical technologies are the very basis of our business: Jenoptik is a globally active technology group and is active in the three photonics-based divisions: Light & Optics, Light & Production and Light & Safety.
The Light & Safety division provides road traffic solutions for safety and public security. Its extensive product portfolio includes comprehensive systems for traffic law enforcement by speed and red light monitoring systems and customized solutions for identifying other traffic violations including the measurement of average speed (section control). The division also provides extensive services that cover the entire support chain including automated data processing and analysis. Special expertise relates to automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) including applications for the police. These systems capture, analyse and help to act against public safety threats such as serious organised crime and border control violations through the use of real-time predictive data analysis. Furthermore, the Light & Safety division offers technical solutions for road user charging. For these applications, the division developed innovative monitoring pillars that combine various digital sensor technologies such as stereo image processing and axle number detection in a single system. With global experience based on more than 30,000 delivered systems worldwide, in-house engineering and design along with local know-how supported by a strong partner network in more than 80 countries, the division helps to make our roads, journeys and communities safer.
