“TraffiCompact” nominated for the German Design Award 2017

The traffic monitoring system „TraffiCompact”, designed by Ralf Jakubowski (Ratingen, Germany) for Jenoptik, was nominated for the German Design Award 2017 by the German Design Council.

The new pole-mounted “TraffiCompact” housing impresses with its ergonomic design and functionality made possible by a new hydroforming production process. Weighing only 4 kilograms, the housing offers easy access to all components, displays and lenses while the open hood simultaneously serves as rain protection. This makes operation and maintenance easy and cost effective. The housing is manufactured by the Jenoptik Traffic Solutions division in Monheim on the Rhine, Germany.

Jenoptik introduced the TraffiCompact housing at the ITS trade fair Traffex in Birmingham in the spring of 2015. It makes speed enforcement more flexible and efficient and helps customers to deploy core components of traffic safety systems, such as cameras and sensors, in a wider variety of applications. The housing’s design follows the same style of earlier, design-award winning products such as “TraffiTower” and “TraffiTop”, which were also created by the German designer Ralf Jakubowski.

“The design of products and interfaces has a decisive influence on the handling of new technologies. Design can help to shape a safer workplace and a safer environment for everyone,” says Ralf Jakubowski.

Already in 2014, a Jenoptik product from the Traffic Solutions division was awarded with the “German Design Award – Special Mention”. The TraffiTop housing is used in mobile traffic monitoring. The German Design Council’s jury was impressed by its ergonomics, functionality, quality and the level of innovation.

The “German Design Award” is one of the most important design awards in Germany. It distinguishes high-quality products as well as projects from product and communication design, outstanding designers and young designers. The German Design Council is the German brand and design authority. Established as a foundation in 1953 by the German Bundestag, it helps business achieve added brand value by design.
