LASYS 2018: Jenoptik demonstrates new laser material processing solutions for automotive production
The Jenoptik Automotive, Healthcare & Industry, and Optical Systems divisions are showcasing together at LASYS, the only international trade fair with a clear focus on laser material processing, from June 5-7, 2018, in Hall 4, Booth D17.
In Stuttgart, Jenoptik will present a variety of new products for laser material processing and thus demonstrate its broad product range throughout the value chain. Irrespective of the kind of tool, be it lasers, processing optics or laser machines, Jenoptik provides its customers with innovative solutions for a variety of applications such as cutting highly complex 3D carbody components, welding differing interior and exterior components or introducing invisible predetermined breakpoints.

Laser cutting for highly efficient processing of complex metal components
The JENOPTIK-VOTAN®BIM laser material range for metal cutting is used in the automobile industry for cutting complex bodywork components from a variety of materials, such as hot-molded, ultra hi-strength steels or aluminum die casting. Similarly, hydroformed tubes for battery or E-engine carrier units in electric vehicles can be cut.
Compared with conventional processing procedures, the non-contact laser process cuts down on costs as well as processing time as there is no time needed for set up. Thanks to its design and the high degree of flexibility, the JENOPTIK-VOTAN®BIM laser cutting system is the ideal virtually wear-free tool for the processing of differing metal applications. With a repetition accuracy of up to 50µm at the highest dynamics, our laser machine is the most accurate robot-based systems engineering on the market and is comparable with conventional cartesian systems. In just one second, the JENOPTIK-VOTAN®BIM can cut a circle or another standard contour. In comparison to other robot systems, this enables cycle time to be significantly reduced.
Several parallel cutting laser robots can be integrated into one machine, enabling greater throughput to be achieved on a significantly reduced installation surface. In addition, the robot-based systems now allow for the complete line integration of the laser cutting and can be easily integrated into production lines and combined processing units. This allows Jenoptik to provide its customers with a significant technological advantage against the competition.
Complex 3D laser processing of bumpers
Following the trend in the automobile industry towards lightweight construction and high levels of production flexibility, Jenoptik has developed specific machinery design for the processing of bumpers. For the best possible processing of these components, two technologies brought onto the market by Jenoptik are being used: 3D laser cutting and laser welding. By combining a laser cutting and laser welding system, Jenoptik provides a highly flexible method of processing a wide variety of these components.
In order to process bumpers as precisely as possible in the prescribed cycle time, 3D laser trimming of the bumper is carried out first. The non-contact process saves material and minimizes the costs that could otherwise occur due to long setup times or tool wear. In addition, the laser cutting guarantees high edge quality.
In the second step, different components, such as the holders for parking sensors or the headlamp washing units, are welded onto the inner side of the bumper in the welding system. Laser welding ensures high-strength welded joints without having to penetrate too deep into the carrier material and risk damaging it.

Jenoptik is also presenting its laser solutions for industrial use at LASYS: The JenLas®fiber ns 25 – 105 nanosecond fiber laser is especially suitable for outstanding processing results in laser material processing such as marking, labeling or structuring of metals and plastics. In addition Jenoptik will be showing the complete process and technology chain in the field of high-power diode lasers – starting from semiconductor material, through mounted diode lasers and stacks, to fiber-coupled diode laser modules.
Thanks to their high quality and reliability, Jenoptik´s laser solutions for industry and medicine have proved themselves for many applications, such as marking of medical products and industrial deep engraving, as well as cutting and perforation of leather for automotive applications. An overview of these varied applications completes the presentation at the Jenoptik booth.
Jenoptik will also present their latest solutions of optical systems to be integrated into machines for micro material processing, including suitable control interfaces, and interfaces for incorporation into modern manufacturing control systems.
The new motorized beam expander for example provides its users a higher degree of automation, thus allowing more flexibility of automation as well as increased productivity.
With the new high-power, fused silica F-Theta objective lens and Beam Expander, specifically for high-power laser applications, the company shows its broadened product range for standard objective lenses.
