Next generation power supplies for air defense
Power generation for air defense typically consists of a diesel engine driving an alternator, which is integrated into a stand-alone system that interfaces with the main components of the weapon platform.
Jenoptik has developed a new hybrid power supply system for the Patriot air defense system that adds/integrates power storage capabilities to the missile launcher power supply: generated electric power is stored by super-capacitors (SuperCaps) that allow for the release of stored energy on demand.
The hybrid approach (patent pending in the USA and Germany) allows for the use of a smaller, highly reliable, and more fuel efficient generator/engine pair to be integrated onto the missile system, dramatically improving the economics of operation and the system uptime. The 15 kW AC genset consumes 0.47 gallons fuel per hour only – outplaying the existing generator by nearly a factor of three. Prototypes of a 15 kW Patriot missile launcher power generation system have been constructed and are currently undergoing testing by the U.S. Army.
Hybrid systems and stand-alone power storage systems (power augmentation packs) that are fed from other available power generation systems are ideal solutions to meet the demands of current and future directed-energy weapon platforms that require the near instantaneous delivery of stored power and can be recharged quickly. Super-capacitor (SuperCaps) technology addresses these unique requirement and allows for charging/discharging cycles of a million times with no adverse effects.

Electric Power Plant (EPP) for Patriot air defense system
Electric Power Plant (EPP)
The EPP is a transportable, all-weather tactical, electrical power system. It is the primary source of 120/208 VAC, 400 Hz power for the RS and ECS.
AC power is generated and supplied by two self-contained, skid-mounted and modularized 150 kW generator set assemblies (GS 1 and GS 2) mounted on a six-wheel, 10-ton trailer. GS 1 and 2 are powered by eight-cylinder, air-cooled diesel engines for increased reliability. Limited GS 1 and 2 remote control and status is available at the ECS via a cable link that also provides two-way voice communications. The EPP provides 24 VDC power for internal control and monitoring circuits, equipment lighting and interface cable circuits to the ECS. The EPP can be operated while parked at 10-degree angle from horizontal.

AC power is generated and supplied by two self-contained, skid-mounted, and modularized 30-kW generator set assemblies mounted on a 4-wheel, 4-ton trailer. Both generator set assemblies are powered by 4-cylinder, air-cooled diesel engines for increased reliability. Limited generator set remote control and status is available at the ICC via an interconnection cable link that also provides two-way voice communications. The EPU also provides 24-Vdc power for internal control and monitoring circuits, equipment lighting, and interface cable circuits to the ICC. The EPU can be operated while parked at a 10-degree angle from horizontal.
