Dr. Michael Mertin
Dr. Michael Mertin is President and CEO of JENOPTIK AG since July 1st, 2007. He joined Jenoptik as COO and member of Executive Board of JENOPTIK AG in October 2006.

Michael Mertin was born in Cologne in 1966.
From 1986 to 1992 he studied physics at the RWTH Aachen and subsequently gained his PhD in Engineering at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (FHG-ILT) in the field of laser materials processing and surface technology. During his degree and PhD studies Michael Mertin worked as a scientific assistant to the Chair for Laser Technology of the RWTH. Subsequently he established and managed a research group at the FHG-ILT for "Optical Coating Technology and Micro-Structures" in collaboration with Siemens AG. Therewith he gained experience in the area of industrial research and technology development. Alongside his studies and training, Michael Mertin worked for several years in a finance consultancy where he acquired comprehensive know-how in business administration.
After successfully gaining his PhD, Michael Mertin joined Carl Zeiss in Oberkochen in July 1996. He began his ten-year career with Zeiss as Head of Technology Coating at the Group's Technology Center. In 2000 he moved to the newly formed business area "System Technology". In 2004 he took over Research and Development and Technologies of the strategic business unit "Eye Care" which comprised "Ophthalmology" and "System Technology”. During the merger of this business unit with the US company SOLA International Inc., Michael Mertin was involved in the implementation of various post-merger activities. Following the establishment of Carl Zeiss Vision International as a result of this merger, he became the company’s Vice President of Technology and Processes in March 2005.
During his activities within Carl Zeiss Group, Michael Mertin was frequently involved in group-wide projects e.g. on "Core Competencies of Carl Zeiss Group", "Portfolio Management", and "Executive Development".
In October 2006 Michael Mertin joined the Executive Board of JENOPTIK AG as COO. Since July 1st, 2007 Michael Mertin is President and CEO of JENOPTIK AG.
Michael Mertin is the chairman or an active member of various economic committees and technology associations. Among others, he is a member of the Government Commission German Corporate Governance Codex and of the main board of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). Furthermore, he is Vice President of the Economic Council to the CDU and of the Economic Council’s Thuringian federal committee. Dr. Mertin is a member of the University Council of the Illmenau University of Technology. He also holds the position of Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena. Since November 2012, Dr. Michael Mertin has been president of the European technology platform Photonics21.
