Auxiliary power units: Securing the supply of electric energy also with the vehicle engine off

Auxiliary power generators from Jenoptik secure a reliable power supply for the electrical systems in your military vehicles while also saving on fuel.

Auxiliary power units and generator sets provide military vehicles and mobile platforms with electrical energy that is tailored to the individual on-board system or electrical consumers such as drives.

The auxiliary power generator set, also known as the auxiliary power unit or APU, is a robust and compact combination of diesel engine, alternator and rectifier. It generates power in line with the relevant requirements of the vehicle and converts this power to the voltage of the on-board system. The APU assumes responsibility for the power supply independently of the vehicle's main engine. This enables to save on fuel, as the main engine does not need to be running constantly in order to operate your on-board systems. The APU is extremely quiet in its operation, allowing you to operate your vehicles and platforms in "silent mode".

Operated together with the main engine, the genset guarantees an additional stronger output for the power supply, to compensate for load peaks, for example. In the event that the main engine fails, you can be sure that your electrical systems will continue to function. The APU secures an emergency power supply in this case.

28 VDC / 8 kW auxiliary power unit

The 8-kW APU supplies military vehicles with power when the main engine is turned off. This compact and efficient aggregate with an 8-kW supply capacity keeps your electrical systems running while also charging batteries.

The 8-kW APU unit consists of a single-cylinder diesel engine and a permanent-magnet-excited alternator that is mounted directly on the crankshaft of the engine. Thanks to this flywheel solution, the alternator is completely maintenance free. The unit is open circuit cooled. This means that a continuous stream of air protects the alternator against overheating.

Integrated diodes adapt the voltage of the electricity generated in line with the vehicle's on-board system. What's more, thanks to the cold start device on the engine, the genset starts easily even at low temperatures. In doing so, the unit meets the most exacting environmental requirements, such as consumption and emission values. The design of the 8-kW APU is extremely compact, meaning it fits in even the smallest of installation spaces such as the battery compartment of the Leopard 2 tank.

Services: Training, maintenance and repairs.

Scope of delivery: Customer-specific; as a minimum an engine, alternator and controller.

28 VDC / 17 kW auxiliary power unit

The extremely quiet 17-kW APU impresses on account of its highly compact design, which is easy to integrate into even the smallest of installation spaces. This makes the genset ideal for supplying electrical power in military vehicles such as the Leopard 2 combat tank. Together with the water-cooled alternator, the water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine delivers an output of 17 kilowatts. The 17-kW APU can be operated with either diesel or kerosene.

The alternator—a permanent-magnet-excited synchronous machine—is mounted directly on the engine flywheel. The constant DC voltage is ensured via the APU control unit, which influences the speed of the engine. A CAN bus interface can be used to connect the electrical systems in your vehicle with the APU control unit without any problems. What's more, thanks to the electrical controller, you can keep an eye of the level of power being delivered by the genset at all times.

Services: Training, maintenance and repairs.

Scope of delivery: Customer-specific; as a minimum an engine, alternator and controller.

Power supply system for PATRIOT air defense systems

Mobile energy systems from Jenoptik are used to reliably supply air defense systems with power while simultaneously saving valuable fuel. The power supply systems cover the full energy requirements of command posts, launchers, fire control systems and radar systems. Our decades of experience in electrical machinery enables us to coordinate all system components with one another to optimum effect. The gensets demonstrate exceptionally high power density and optimum efficiency while also being extremely compact in design.

We have developed a hybrid power supply system especially for the PATRIOT missile defense system. This power supply system combines a 5 kVA brushless three-phase permanent-magnet-excited synchronous alternator with a water-cooled diesel engine. A supercapacitor is used to absorb load peaks. As such, the diesel engine does not need to be dimensioned to account for all possible loads. A temporary "silent mode" reduces noise levels when starting the engine.

Diesel-electric hybrid power supply system for launcher unit:

  • Hybrid generator set:
    • Jenoptik three-phase synchronous alternator, 5 kVA, 208 V / 120 V, 400 Hz
    • Permanent magnet exited, brushless
    • Perkins diesel engine, water-cooled, 3,600 rpm
  • Integrated static converter:
    • 10 kVA, 208 V / 120 V, 400 Hz
    • Power source from 50 Hz / 60 Hz grid
  • Supercapacitors:
    • Absorbing load peaks
    • Engine start powered by supercaps. Temporary "silent mode".
    • Diesel genset does not need to be sized to account for all possible peak loads.

Further generating sets, converters and components:

    • Diesel-electric generator sets:
      • 2 x 150 kW for simultaneous supply of power to radar and fire control station
      • Jenoptik three-phase synchronous alternator, brushless, air-cooled, double bearing design
